The History of Rite Choice Community Federal Credit
Union
Located in Wilsonville, Oregon. Rite Choice Community Federal Credit Union is a full
service financial cooperative dedicated to serving families with a financial
alternative to commercial banks. The strength and security of a cooperative
financial institution becomes clear by examining our rates. We offer better than
commercial rates on: Savings, Loans,
Money Market, Certificates,
IRAs and many Club
Accounts.
In
1973, PayLess NW Associates, formed a credit union. This provided pharmacists
and store clerks a place to save and borrow without having to pay
commercial rates. This was popular with store employees and the credit union
noticed growth as associates began taking advantage of the ease of saving and
borrowing. |
As
PayLess grew and changed, so did its credit union. PayLess NW acquired stores in
California and Washington. Then the holding company for Thrifty Drugs, merged
with PayLess NW forming TPI, and the Credit Union offered its services to
associates in 11 western states. With the associates increasing their
participation, the Credit Union began to expand it's services. No
Fee Checking (Share Drafts) and a fixed rate VISA
program were introduced offering much better rates. Lending programs
expanded to include Mortgage Loans, helping associates to finance or refinance
their homes.
Thrifty PayLess Drug Federal Credit Union expanded, serving members living
throughout the west. The Credit Union installed ATM machines in the TPI
Distribution Centers. With ATM machines in Ogden, Woodland, and Wilsonville,
members have access to their Credit Union without any additional fees.
In
November in 1996, a meeting was held at the TPI Corporate Headquarters stating:
TPI was so successful that the pharmacy chain has been purchased by the Rite Aid
Corporation of Camp Hill, PA. Information to the Credit Union was the
Wilsonville Corporate Headquarters would be phased out. |
There was some concern the Credit Union would no longer serve the pharmacy
associates. As with any change, the company went through some staffing changes
and seven hundred corporate associates entered into the local job pool. Some TPI
associates were offered positions in Camp Hill. Most went to work for other
pharmacy outlets like Walgreens, Fred Meyer, and Safeway Food and Drug.
In an effort to be responsive to the concerns of our membership and our
corporate sponsor, the credit union changed its name to Retail Pharmacy Federal
Credit Union. Under the new name, we continued to offer our services to the
employees of the Rite Aid Corporation in the ten western states. We also
modified our field of membership and invited employees of other local businesses
to enjoy the benefits of credit union membership.
In 2001, the credit union changed its name, once again, to Rite Choice Community Federal
Credit Union. This change was made to position the credit union for future
growth within its market area. This name was selected to reflect our continuing
affiliation with our primary sponsor, Rite Aid, but to also address the concerns
of new corporate sponsors who were not in the pharmaceutical business.
On January 1, 2003, Rite Choice Community Federal Credit Union became a community credit
union offering its products and services to anyone who lives, works, worships,
or attends school within our prescribed community. The approved
community includes western Clackamas County, northern Marion County, and
southeast Washington County in Oregon. This area includes the larger cities
of Wilsonville, Tualatin, Sherwood, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Canby
and Woodburn as well as the outlying rural regions (see
map). |
